The Ananda Institute of Alternative Living is located in the foothills of the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains in Northern California, 17 miles from Nevada City, California. Our campus is located amidst the 60-acre Ananda Meditation Retreat, the original home of Ananda. We are surrounded by beautiful forests with sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Hiking trails from the retreat weave down to the South Yuba River, and other scenic lookout spots. Our campus is simple and natural, unlike any traditional college campus.
The retreat includes staff cabins and dormitories for students, rental cottages, two meditation temples, classrooms, dining room, lounge, offices and beautiful meditation gardens and vegetable gardens. We are located 5 miles from Ananda Village, the 780-acre spiritual community where 300 adults and children make their home. Ananda Village includes many facilities for students including an organic vegetarian market, bakery & deli, mailroom, thrift store, jewelry store, large community center and gymnasium for sports, massage & chiropractor services, a fitness gym, two school campuses for pre-school through 12th grades, several businesses, the Expanding Light Yoga retreat, Crystal Hermitage and many resident homes.
