Yoga Philosophy Studies
Out of the Labyrinth (Foundations of Western Philosophy I)
Many modern philosophers have interpreted the discoveries of relativity, evolution, and other scientific findings as "proof" that life has no purpose or meaning. This course challenges these assumptions and shows how these same discoveries can be seen as validating the centuries old insights of yoga and Vedanta.
Hope for a Better World (Foundations of Western Philosophy II)
As an extension of the preceding course, this class examines such western thinkers as Freud, Adam Smith, Macchiavelli, Marx, and Malthus to show, in terms of their own reasoning, the impracticality of their "solutions." It presents the alternative of "the small communities solution"
as a practical means of constructing a better world, utilizing the 40 years of experience of Ananda and the insights of its founder, Swami Kriyananda.
Nota bene:
The institute courses may provide material that is critical of many modern assumptions. An attempt will always be made to treat fairly and even-handedly whatever matter remains still, at present, controversial. Thus, in giving students fresh insights into standard subjects, the curriculum will give tools also with which they can form their own open-minded judgments.
Material Success Through Yoga Principles
Topics include: supportive leadership, setting goals, defining priorities, integrating ideals with practical necessities, working with money, right livelihood, overcoming obstacles, and finding joy and satisfaction in your life.
World Religions and Spirituality
An overview of the major world religions from the perspective of identifying their common principles and objectives. The class will examine the different approaches to such issues as the purpose of life, the importance of an after-life, reincarnation, standards of right living, relationship to a deity, and techniques for spiritual growth.
Alternative Science and Technology
Explores contemporary science and physics issues from a yogic perspective, emphasizing principles of dharma and right action, solution-consciousness as opposed to problem-consciousness and attitudes of support and service. Lab sessions will primarily focus on developing practical applications for alternative sources of energy and may include both established and emerging explorations into solar, wind, fuel cells, and more. The course also uses the Institute's own alternative power sources (solar, wind & generator) as a working lab.
Creativity for Self-Awareness
Creativity is important for both the highest material success and the highest spiritual progress. It might be defined as "seeing every reality as it is, intrinsically, and then finding ways to improve it. Theory classes cover a yogic approach to creativity and the arts, intuition, self-expression, harmony, aspiration, energy, magnetism and innovation. Lab classes include art, music, drama, dance, architecture, aesthetic gardening, cooking, and more. Classes in handwriting analysis, color analysis, palmistry and astrology offer additional tools for self-awareness.
